Mental Health Nursing: The Roles of Psychiatric Nurses

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

In today’s world, it seems that almost any topic is open for debate. While I was gathering facts for this article, I was quite surprised to find some of the issues I thought were settled are actually still being openly discussed.

With the introduction of newer issues and recent needs, the concepts in mental health nursing or psychiatric nursing expanded dramatically. From the need to provide nursing care for mental health patients during the end of the 19th century, nurses are nowadays commissioned to provide psychiatric-mental health services on a variety of settings.

A psychiatric nurse works on different settings such as community mental health programs, psychiatric hospitals and facilities, the academe and even in the criminal justice system. There are only two levels of psychiatric nursing: the basic and the advanced. Both of which have various responsibilities.

For the basic level, the psychiatric nurse will carry out the physician’s orders. These are registered nurses who are equipped with the knowledge on developing, implementing and assessing nursing care plans; they also administer medications and provide direct nursing care. They are usually found in family-based settings, assisting the family members in dealing with a member’s mental disorder. However, they may also be found in education settings where their primary role is to teach the public or other mental health care providers about mental health and psychological disorders. They may also assist with counseling and intervention.

On the other hand, registered nurses who also have a master’s degree or a doctoral degree in mental health nursing could qualify as Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners. Having more advanced skills and knowledge on this field, they could practice assessments, diagnoses and treatments for patients of mental health. Depending on the state, they are also qualified to practice psychotherapy and case management, and prescribe medications. Also, they may choose to hold administrative positions in schools and hospitals and may also conduct researches of their own.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

These are the basic roles of psychiatric nurses. But due to the development of further needs in the management of psychiatric disorders, the roles were expanded to meet the demands.

For example, the problems presented through the need of nursing care facilities in high security areas such as those similar in forensic nursing. The nurses working in this setting need to meet the balance between protecting the public from the potential harm caused by the patients and providing an environment that will also aim to offer therapeutic interventions.

Another change in the roles of psychiatric nurses is the extension of psychiatric services to prisons. This pose the challenge to psychiatric nurses to give the same mental health care services to inmates regardless of the boundaries set by the lack of facilities and trained people to do the work.

Lastly, the need to advance psychiatric custody to disordered individuals who are under the criminal justice system. As we may know, not all correctional institutions have dedicated units for inmates with psychiatric disorders. But in the past years, psychiatric facilities are being integrated into the criminal justice system. Because of the formation of the mental health courts, newer responsibilities were added to psychiatric nursing.

Mental health nursing, like many other professions, have met fundamental changes in the past recent years. This may be largely attributed to the improvements of newer facilities therefore newer needs for professionals which are mirrored in nursing professions. In many areas of psychiatric though, there is no doubt that there are fewer changes. However, as seen in the mental healthcare, these changes have prepared the way towards better systems and better people working in the field.

It never hurts to be well-informed with the latest on Mental Health. Compare what you’ve learned here to future articles so that you can stay alert to changes in the area of Mental Health.

Tips in Motivating Customer Service Employees

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

The more you understand about any subject, the more interesting it becomes. As you read this article you’ll find that the subject of Motivation is certainly no exception.

Customer service is a growing industry today, and it can be daunting to not only teach people how to face clients, but to actually expect them to get the courage to speak to clients at all. Customer service can be difficult since it operates on many different fronts, and you need people who are willing and able to take the stress of dealing with many different kinds of clients.

From patient and gentle people to those who are short of insulting people on the phone. You will need to motivate your customer service employees on two principal fronts: in dealing with customers, and in staying on the job even after all the stress.

As the leader of a group of customer service employees, you will need to constantly motivate your team to work hard, and to keep on working no matter what. It will be difficult to maintain their level of energy throughout their stint as customer service employees. Here are a few tips to help you motivate them.

- First, recognize that you need to do motivation training, and motivate your crew, from the very beginning and through the job. You cannot simply motivate your people once, and then move on to other people and leave the team, expecting it to succeed after a single lesson. You will need to keep on motivating your team, especially since every single customer is different. You will have easy customers that can encourage your team, but there will be clients that will be extremely critical and angry, and they can discourage customer service employees. Be prepared for work!

If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole Motivation story from informed sources.

- At the beginning, you will need to warn your customer service employees about the pitfalls of the job. They will come into contact with people who do not even deserve their attention off the phone. They may talk to people who will keep on asking the same questions over and over, and who will have a hard time understanding their answers. They will never please every single person that they get on the phone with. If your employees are aware of these pitfalls beforehand, they know what to expect.

- Follow your chronicles of the pitfalls with tips from your own experiences ? but don’t make yourself sound like a hero who knows everything. When taking things back to your experiences, say that you yourself were unsure ? because you most certainly were! You need to bring yourself down to the level of the beginner, but show that you were able to get out of the pitfalls by working hard and being patient.

- Empower your employees and teach them to be self-motivating. One thing that customer service employees need is to grow extremely thick skin. They need to learn how to pick themselves up and get on with their lives. They need to leave their troubles at home so that they do not carry a sad, negative vibe across the phone lines; and if they have any problems with the clients that they serve, they should learn not to take this problem out of the office. Teach them methods to manage themselves.

- When teaching your employees how to have thick skin, bring things back to something relevant to them. Ask them: when was the last time that you let trouble slide off you? Then tell them to use these techniques when dealing with their clients.

- Have rewards for good customer service dealings.

The Science of the Magazine Publishing Process

Monday, May 24th, 2010

In science, there always has to be a process. Science occurs in the sequence of questioning, researching, experimenting, documenting, and concluding. Like in any scientific process that uses the scientific method, magazine publishing also has its own simplified version — production and distribution. I wouldn’t call it a vicious cycle because of the way the magazine’s content reinvents itself, but it is still a cycle in itself. This is proven by the continuous racks of magazine stands that fill up every week and every month.

Production: The Perfect Bind

The models, editors and photographers have done their job. Now the pages are laid out and completed. Without the right finish to the product, they will be nothing but tattered pages of words and pictures. It is time to turn these pages into a magazine.

The different sections of the magazine are printed out separately. Some are in black and white, others in full color. It all depends on the editor’s preference.

After this, there are two ways by which a magazine’s sections can be bound together. It could be done through saddle-stitching or perfect binding. Saddle-stitching does not use thread or any weak material. It is done by stapling the center fold within the magazine’s cover page. This is often used for magazines that don’t have a lot of pages and don’t need heavy duty material to bind the pages together. If staple wire is too weak to put the sections together, then a spine is made by gluing one end of the pages together. This is called perfect binding and is used for thick magazines such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan.

It’s really a good idea to probe a little deeper into the subject of Magazine Publishing. What you learn may give you the confidence you need to venture into new areas.

Distribution: Tapping into Globalization and the World Wide Web

As times have changed, the magazine industry has naturally evolved to adopt the paper-free system. Indeed, magazine publishing has already infiltrated cyberspace and beyond. There are no pages to print and no papers to bind. These are called online magazines and are usually either copies of the paper-based ones or are independent magazines themselves. All they need are their publishing schedules, pictures and articles, and they’re good to go once they have a solid reader base. The profit they generate will most probably be from pay-per-read articles or from the profit generated from high traffic to the website.

When before, magazines were only distributed in the country of its origin, now it is being distributed worldwide and franchised by different countries. Today, magazine publishing has overdone itself in that it has allowed its publications to sprout up in countries such as China and Australia, allowing them to work under the name of the magazine but produce their own content.

Of course, the content must still be parallel with the topics that the main franchise of the magazine is known for. The irony here is that the different countries can localize their content but are participating in a worldwide company, allowing diversity in the process of globalization.

As you can see, the magazine publishing industry is in its booming stage, and many people are cashing in on the potential of the magazine business to grow. As it involves a complicated process in production and distribution, it allows creative minds to venture in and participate. It takes brains and willpower to get an edge in the magazine industry.

There’s a lot to understand about Magazine Publishing. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

Relocation Woes

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

The mere fact that you are thinking of relocation means that the reason for doing so is pretty important. If that is the case, make up your mind fast and weigh the pros and cons already because trust me, the process of relocation is not anywhere easy. It is stressful as hell and you are not even stepping out of your old house yet.

Just ask anyone who moved from one place to another after staying for so long in one town and they will tell you that the last two weeks in the old town and the first few weeks in the new town can be pretty hellish. Here are some of the relocation woes that you need to face before you can actually rest and relax in your new place.

1. Stuff, Stuff and more stuff

If you are a veteran mover and are used to moving from one place to another, it would not be a problem as you will have the sense not to purchase and keep so much stuff, but if you are someone who did not even think of moving until the opportunity presented itself, you will probably tons of things that you don’t know what to do with.

Usually, the first order of business is to determine which should go to the trash can, which will be sold and which will be packed. This can be heartbreaking as you are in a way throwing away or selling decades of memories. Most people would not want to part with their things and would want to bring all of them to the new location. But this cannot be.

Truthfully, the only difference between you and Relocation experts is time. If you’ll invest a little more time in reading, you’ll be that much nearer to expert status when it comes to Relocation.

2. Movers

After segregating the stuff, you now have to pack the stuff that you need in cartons and hire a reliable moving company to bring them to your new relocation. This however should mean that you already have a place on the other side of the atlantic. If you still do not have one, this is one problem that you need to take care of as soon as possible. Leaving town and moving to another without a place to stay is just idiotic.

In hiring movers, make sure that you gave them the right address. If you can, go with them when moving your stuff. Or if you know somebody with a big truck, let them do the moving. You can just pay a small amount as well as the gas. This is especially true if you do not have much stuff with you.

3. Paper works
Changing address is not as easy as you think especially if you are moving to another country and not just another town. Moving to another state even requires some paper works like registering to various government agencies to update your record. Remember that each state will have different laws and therefore need different sets of records for them to be imposed.

Another country is even more complicated as you need to secure either a working visa or a working permit as well as the permit to stay in that country.

Relocation may be a hassle but at the end of the day, if all the stress is well worth the new life and the new opportunity that it provides, then you have not lost anything at all. You, in fact, will be gaining a whole lot.

Now you can be a confident expert on Relocation. OK, maybe not an expert. But you should have something to bring to the table next time you join a discussion on Relocation.

Office Relocation

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

When most people think of Relocation, what comes to mind is usually basic information that’s not particularly interesting or beneficial. But there’s a lot more to Relocation than just the basics.

Have you ever considered an office relocation? Sometimes this is needed to expand the business or to cut costs. Before you transfer to the new one, be sure that you have a new office to move in to first.

To do this, check out ads and visit various buildings that have spaces which are up for lease. By doing that, you will be able to see the actual floor area and ask the building administrator important questions such as how much electrical capacity will the new building be able to provide as well as the floor load.

This is important if you have a lot of computers which naturally consumes a lot of electricity and also if you have a large library which contains not only books but files as well.

The bottom line whether or not to lease the office space is the cost of rent. No one gives this at a flat rate and most of time, this is given out at X dollar per square footage. You just have to compare this with how much the others are offering and if it fits your budget and your office requirements, only then have you finally found a new office.

The next phase is moving from the old location to the new one and everyone in the office has to do their share to get this done.

One of the most important things in any office is the files. There are soft and hard copies of this so everything has to be sorted out and packed properly. While reviewing the documents, you should also review which ones are no longer important. That way, you don’t carry this junk to the new office. Since this is considered company property, don’t just put it in waste bag but run it through a paper shredder first.

Those of you not familiar with the latest on Relocation now have at least a basic understanding. But there’s more to come.

The next thing to clear out is the office desk. You have to remove all office supplies stored here and this includes paper clips, pens, notepads and anything else of value. You have the option to donate a few of these and for those that are no longer working you might as well throw it away.

As for the office desk, well it’s up to you if you want to use it in the new office or not. In a time of an economic crisis, it will be better to use it until such time that the economy recovers.

The last thing to worry about when moving to a new office is the office equipment which includes computers and other office furniture. If these are in working condition, use them until it conks out. You can surely buy new units if you need to later on.

The only question now is who will move the stuff to the new office? Well if you have trucks and the manpower, you can do this yourself. But if you don’t, it will be better to hire a mover since they are more experienced in this kind of work.

Those who work there will even help you pack and unpack when you get to the new office. If you have the new layout ready, you just point to them where the desk, furniture and other office equipment will be located so you can work on the smaller stuff later on.

An office relocation is not that different from a home because you do the same thing when moving from one place to the next.

Sterling Silver Pendants

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

The use of silver to make jewelry has been around for centuries, and although the silversmith techniques have changed somewhat throughout the years, the attention to quality and detail has not. Sterling silver, at one time was reserved only for those who were wealthy, and few could afford it.

Thankfully, in the modern world Sterling silver has become much more affordable and one does not need to be wealthy in order to have a Sterling silver pendant within their jewelry wardrobe. In today’s market it is relatively easy to choose a quality Sterling silver pendant, if you keep your eyes open to the little details.

Sterling silver is made from silver ore, which is then combined with other metal alloys in order to give silver strength. 100% pure silver ore is very pliable and tends not to remain as it is formed and quickly loses its shape. The most common alloy used is copper and this is added to the silver, as this does not alter the color, but does provide it with the necessary strength to hold its shape, ensuring that your Sterling silver pendant will maintain its designed under normal use.

If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole Silver Pendants story from informed sources.

However, all jewelry that is claiming to be Sterling silver is required to be stamped or have some sort of recognized hallmark. Often it is simply marked. .925 or with a 9.25 and that refers to the minimum amount of pure silver needed in its composition in order to be called Sterling silver. Skydiving Varieties

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Skydiving is a pleasurable sport once you have overcome your initial fears of it. If you are planning your first jump, you have three varieties to choose from: tandem skydiving, static line and accelerated free fall.

Tandem skydiving is most popular for beginners. Tandem skydiving refers to a type of skydiving where a beginner or student is connected via a harness to an experienced skydiver. The experienced skydiver or tandem instructor controls the whole jump. The student needs only minimal instruction before making a tandem jump.

The first time skydivers gets exposed to the skydiving routine in tandem skydiving. Some training programs, still gives instruction on how and when to deploy the main canopy themselves. But the tandem instructor remains primarily responsible for safe and timely parachute deployment.

The tandem skydiving equipment is relatively different from the normal skydiving gears. Tandem skydivers use the drogue parachute. The drogue parachute is immediately deployed after leaving the plane in order to slow the free fall speed of two people. This would lengthen the duration of the jump. Tandem skydivers also use larger main parachutes so that the weight of two people can be supported.

A tandem instructor is not just an experienced skydiver you know. There are rules and regulations that limits who may skydive with a student. In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration or FFA requires a skydiver to have more than five hundred dives and three years of skydiving experience before becoming a tandem instructor.

Tandem instructors who have passed the requirements demanded by their laws are required to pass an instructor certification course before they start jumping with their students of the plane.

Static line skydiving is said to be the oldest method of learning how to skydive. This is similar to the way parachuting for military airborne soldiers. They have to jump 3,000 feet high with a cord hooked on a plane that pulls your parachute open.

If you find yourself confused by what you’ve read to this point, don’t despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

Students would have to undergo the Static Line First Jump Course, which take 4 to 6 hours. After taking the course, the student could immediately to the static line jump under the direct supervision of a USPA certified jumpmaster or instructor.

A static line parachute jump involves no freefall. As the student exit the aircraft, the parachute is opened by a static line attached to the aircraft. Unlike tandem skydiving, this requires the student to land on his own. But his descent to the ground is done with the guidance of radio communications.

Static line skydiving can bee similar to the technique, Instructor- Assisted Deployment or IAD. The IAD is when the instructor initiates the deployment of the student’s parachute when the student jumps off the plane.

The last skydiving variety that beginners could try would be the accelerated free fall. Accelerated free fall is commonly called AFF, with this training discipline, there are two certified instructors that jump off the aircraft with the students. They would accompany the students while in free fall and will hold onto the student’s harness. That is why it can also be called Harness Hold Training.

The students have their own parachute with AFF. As part of the AFF training, the students are trained to handle emergency procedures. Since the students will also direct their landing, their training also includes proper landing procedures.

Since instructors would also be free falling side by side with students, they would be able to correct the student’s body positions and other problems encountered during the free fall. The students may also radio ground personnel to direct the student to the landing spot, but the student must develop the skills for solo landing.

There are many skydiving methods and varieties to choose from. Are you ready to take the jump?
