Mental Health: Not Just the Absence of Mental Disorders

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Have you ever wondered what exactly is up with Mental Health? This informative report can give you an insight into everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Mental Health.

Most people think that mental health only applies to those people who have diagnosable mental disorders. The truth is ALL of us should be concerned about our mental health. It is our basis of being healthy. It is the holistic approach to health. In fact, many people adhere to the belief that mental health is the core of healthiness. Health starts and ends with mental health. It encompasses everything and it is everybody’s business.

For virtually all people, mental health is often neglected until something apparently becomes wrong. Until then, we will have to wait for signs that it is vital to our existence, to our well being, to our relationships with other people, to our perceptions, to our fulfillment and even to our own happiness.

Even though we have achieved great medical advancements, there still seems to be lacks in our general knowledge on mental health. We have developed quick fixes to our physical ailments but we are left far behind with our solutions to mental illnesses. If we have anything, there still remain some loopholes and what we know is inconclusive. We haven’t developed universal treatments for psychological disorders and even assessments and diagnosis of such ailments are flawed.

In the past, the general concept for being healthy is the “absence of disease”. If so, then someone who doesn’t have diagnosable heart attack but experience irrational fear on something like chicken or heights is a healthy person. In fact, no.

While blood pressure, cholesterol level, and body temperature are easy to asses these are still seen as singular components of our health. Disruptions in these mechanisms mean that a person could be physically ill. However, the health of a person is not only associated to how well his body functions but also to how well are his psychological, emotional and social dispositions. Manifestations of mental illness are much harder to asses since most symptoms occur discreetly during the developmental stages of the disorders and internal states are dependent on the subjective nature of the disorder. For example, someone who usually feels “blue” may or may not be diagnosed with depression.

Hopefully the information presented so far has been applicable. You might also want to consider the following:

We also have to take into account the social aspect of mental health. People who have sickness have more obvious manifestations that they are ill, therefore the society and immediate environment could easily identify whether or not a person is sick. For mental health, however, ignorance could lead to wrong perceptions. For example, a teenager who became drug-dependent and later committed suicide is viewed as irresponsible and desperate when in fact he may be suffering from a psychological disorder.

A simplistic definition to mental health could be “successful mental functioning”. But what are the parameters of this definition? What could possibly tell us that someone is struggling through mental illness?

a) Someone who is distressed for a prolonged period without apparent, logical reason.
b) Someone who has disruptions in thinking
c) Someone who has altered behaviors and moods
d) Someone who relies on substances such as drugs, alcohol and cigarettes may have issues on their mental health
e) Someone who has impaired social functions

These are just representations of how a person with mental health may behave. However, these are not conclusive bases.

As we may yet to understand, mental health is directly correlated with physical ailment or health. Both may be one and the same but are very different in nature.

Is there really any information about Mental Health that is nonessential? We all see things from different angles, so something relatively insignificant to one may be crucial to another.

Managing a Relocation Sale

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

The following article lists some simple, informative tips that will help you have a better experience with Relocation.

You may have to be move to a new town or state. When this happens, you have to decide what items will be brought along and what will be left behind. For items you decide to leave behind, why don’t you make some money by holding a relocation sale?

A relocation sale is like a garage sale. So you make the most of it, here are a few things you should do before you open.

It is best to organize all the items that you will be selling days before the sale. For those who have kids, let them decide what toys they want to get rid of and those they want to keep.

When you have collected all the items for the relocation sale, sort it out by putting these in different boxes or baskets and then put a signage so people will not have a hard time going through it. If some of these items are dirty, better clean it first so you are able to sell it at the best prices.

So people will know of your upcoming relocation, advertise by putting posting signs or even putting an ad in the local paper.

A few hours before the relocation sale, do a check one more time to be sure everything is ready. Lay the boxes and the bins on the lawn and if you need more space, try putting some of these on top and under a table. Another option is to lay some of the items inside the living room since you already have so much space when most of the stuff you are keeping have already been packed away.

If you find yourself confused by what you’ve read to this point, don’t despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

Make sure each item is priced individually and have a price matrix around so if the price tag comes off, you have master list which you can review. If you have a lot of clothes, display this using a clothesline.

Some people who drop by will probably negotiate before buying some of your items. Since you don’t need them anymore, you can probably give it at their asking price but if you know that the item is in good condition and is worth more than what they are asking for, stick to your guns.

If some of the items you are selling are fragile, make sure that you have boxes, old newspaper and bags so this can be given properly to the buyer. Some people will even buy some of your stuff that don’t work anymore and if you think it is not worth any money, think again because they can probably make up some money once it is fixed so again, let them have it.

For electronic items like an old blender, hair dryer, iron or vacuum cleaner, make sure you have an electrical outlet nearby so they can check it before buying.

The best time to hold a relocation sale is on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you don’t have plans on Sunday, you can probably extend it one more day since most people also stay at home on weekends.

How much money you can make from the renovation sale is hard to predict. This depends how many items you are willing to sell and how you price it. If you are able to get rid of many of the items, you can consider it as a success. That way, you don’t have to worry about the items that you will leave behind when it is time to move out.

Now you can be a confident expert on Relocation. OK, maybe not an expert. But you should have something to bring to the table next time you join a discussion on Relocation.

Selecting the Perfect Gift for the Holidays

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Have you ever wondered what exactly is up with Silver Pendants? This informative report can give you an insight into everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Silver Pendants.

There is nothing in the world more stressful than attempting to complete all of your Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve. After fighting through crowds to pick through sparse leftovers in hundreds of stores for the perfect gift, eventually settling on a gift that is “good enough”, and then standing in line for an hour in an attempt to pay for that gift even a lobotomy may seem preferable; after all, you at least get to be knocked out for that!

With the busy schedule of the people of today, however, it is becoming increasingly more difficult for individuals to get ahead in the holiday rush. After all, stores have established hours which generally conveniently coincide with the time that most of the world’s population has to be at work. (More than one individual has speculated that this is not, in fact, a coincidence.) Deliberate or no, it is difficult for many to do their shopping in an actual store. Because of this, virtual stores are on the rise as people enjoy the ability to shop at any hour of the day or night from the relative comfort of their homes.

The information about Silver Pendants presented here will do one of two things: either it will reinforce what you know about Silver Pendants or it will teach you something new. Both are good outcomes.

Shopping on the internet does not, however, eliminate one of the most pressing problems facing holiday shoppers: deciding what they should buy. For years the jewelry industry has done their best to provide shoppers with an all in one opportunity to select gifts for the special people in their life: a ring for Mom, a tie tack for Dad, a necklace for baby sister Sarah. It seems as though regardless of the individual or their personality there is something for them in the vast network of jewelry shops.

Buying the same gifts year after year can get monotonous, however, and jewelry stores have to constantly fight to stay on top of the market. They are consistently coming up with popular new products to attract in the needy consumer, and they have done it again with the advent of silver card pendants. Silver card pendants are pendants that attach to a card and can be worn as a necklace after they are given as a gift. Simple, right? The best thing is that regardless of who you are shopping for there is a silver card pendant that suits the occasion! Is your mother’s birthday coming up? Buy her a pendant sporting a birthday cake. Mother’s Day right around the corner and you haven’t even started thinking about what you’re going to get your mother? Buy her a pendant that says “I love you Mom” and send it with a card. Is your sister-in-law a new mom? Buy her a pendant that allows her to slip in a photo of her new bundle of joy and carry him or her with her wherever she goes.

As you can see, regardless of the occasion a silver card pendant makes the perfect gift. These can be purchased from almost any online specialty retailer; you have only to go looking.

Take time to consider the points presented above. What you learn may help you overcome your hesitation to take action.

How to Motivate People

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

A good leader should be able a good role model so that the people under them will be able to do whatever challenges come their way. If a member of the group is not doing well, that person has to talk to them and find out what is wrong. Since this is something the leader is not born with, they have to learn how to motivate other people.

People need to understand that in order for you to motivate others you have to know how to motivate yourself. Does this sound strange? Not really because it is impossible to let others do what you want unless there is something that makes you want to push forward. This determination will make it easier for you to inspire those who are not inspired.

The best way to motivate others is to come up with a plan. To do that, you have to talk with that person to find out what makes them tick. You can ask them questions like what makes them do what they do on a daily basis, what they enjoy about what they are doing and what improvements they want to see.

It will also be a good idea to make goals which are a bit challenging but are measurable, realistic and specific.

There is a saying that goes ?difficult but not impossible.? If your group understands that it will take a certain amount of work but it is doable, they will do their best to accomplish it.

The job of a leader is to lead. This means you have to delegate each person with a certain task. Once everyone knows their part, all you have to do is monitor their progress. By giving people a chance to shine, these people will be encouraged to impress you and also impress themselves.

The best time to learn about Motivation is before you’re in the thick of things. Wise readers will keep reading to earn some valuable Motivation experience while it’s still free.

In a way, it is a learning experience for them because if they can accomplish what they are tasked to do, they will become more confident in the future.

In every goal or task that your people accomplish, it is not enough to say thank you or good job. A more effective way will be to work out a reward system which in short means giving them incentives. If you are the boss in a company, give them a certificate of recognition, a pay raise or maybe even a promotion.

If these people understand what they are doing, there is no doubt that you have succeeded in motivating them.

For people who think motivating people is a one time thing, think again because this is an ongoing process. What you initiated now may only last for a short period of time which is why you always have to check on your group to make sure their morale is high.

Every so often, try to talk with the people you work with about other topics and not only those related with what you are working on. This will show your human side so that whenever there is a problem, they know they can count on you to try and help them.

How to motivate other people is a continuous process. It is will not always be easy but as long as you are able to gain the trust of those around, you will be able to inspire them to do more which is basically what makes a good leader.

So now you know a little bit about Motivation. Even if you don’t know everything, you’ve done something worthwhile: you’ve expanded your knowledge.

How to Enjoy Skydiving

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Skydiving is a lot of fun. It is like riding a rollercoaster but even better because the ride does not end in just a few seconds. Once you have completed ground school, it is time for you to do the real thing.

There are three types of skydiving that are done in the US. There is tandem jumping, static line and free falling.

In tandem jumping, an experienced jumper does this with you. This person will be the one to guide you all the way till you reach the ground. You don’t have to do anything the entire time except enjoy the ride.

The position of a tandem jump is with the instructor on your back carrying an extra large parachute that is capable of carrying weights of up to 500 pounds. You will wear a harness that is attached to the instructor and once you exit the plane, you guys will be in free fall motion for about a minute or so before the parachute is deployed and you slowly descend to the ground.

The tandem jump is considered to be ideal for people who don’t meet the physical or proficiency requirements to make the jump on their own. This will allow people who are overweight the opportunity to still have fun.

The cost of a tandem jump could be from $70 to over $300. If there are a lot of skydiving centers where you live, you should check each one out so you can get the best deal.

Sometimes the most important aspects of a subject are not immediately obvious. Keep reading to get the complete picture.

The static line jump had its origins from the military. This is because your parachute will automatically open a few seconds after you jump off the plane. The jump is done at an altitude of 3,000 feet and after a series of jumps you will now be the one to pull the cord.

The third and last is the accelerated free fall. This is the best way to experience modern sport skydiving because you can do some acrobatics before it is time to pull the cord. You will exit the aircraft between 10,000 to 12,000 feet and slowly drop to the ground with the parachute open at 4,000 feet.

The entire time that you do any of these jumps, there will always be an instructor around from the moment you board the plane until you land on the ground. They may not be attached to your back anymore like in tandem jumping but they will be beside you to make sure everything went according to plan.

The three types of jumping are considered part of the training requirement so you can do a solo jump. It will cost money to become a licensed jumper even if this is not required by the FAA or the Federal Aviation Administration but this is a requirement if you plan to jump in drop zones regulated by the United States Parachute Association or USPA.

Skydiving is a lot of fun and you need to be trained on the ground first before you are allowed to jump off from an aircraft on your own. If you have the time and money, you will be able to get a license in less than year so you can jump anytime and anywhere.

Just remember everything that was taught to you in class so the next jump won’t be your last.

Of course, it’s impossible to put everything about Skydiving into just one article. But you can’t deny that you’ve just added to your understanding about Skydiving, and that’s time well spent.

Before Jumping: What I Need to Know About Skydiving

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Skydiving is a sport that may make you shake to your core, that is if you’re afraid of heights. So let’s know the basics of skydiving, to make us feel a little bit safer when we try to jump. Skydivers can fly laterally, they can also do barrel rolls, somersaults, swooping dives, and glide and soar like a bird. But how do they do that?

This is because the falling body reaches Terminal Velocity. There are no acceleration, the body have gained a steady momentum because the atmospheric drag or air resistance and body weight became equal and opposite. At terminal velocity, the falling sensation disappears. The Terminal velocity makes it easier to perform acrobatics, formations or just take picture from the specially mounted camera.

Remarkably, skydiving is a safe sport. Those who experience accidents are often under a fully functioning canopies and experienced jumpers who try to do extreme movements. Beginner accidents are rare and fatalities due to malfunctioning equipment are rarer still.

There are four essentials in skydiving: fundamental safety, free fall plan, parachute usage and manipulation, and safe landing.

With fundamental safety, this means knowing the how and when of this sport. Checking the gear, proper procedure in jumping, presence of mind in case of emergency, parachute deployment, managing parachute failure, selecting a good landing site and actual landing is included in fundamental safety.

A skydiving beginner should learn how to maneuver or turn the body while in free fall. It is important for the diver to manage a stable position while falling downward at a velocity of 120 mph. This is the second basic element in skydiving.

If you don’t have accurate details regarding Skydiving, then you might make a bad choice on the subject. Don’t let that happen: keep reading.

Parachute usage and manipulation is the third essential thing to learn about skydiving. It is important to learn how to open the parachute in mid-air safely or open the reserve chute when the major parachute would not open. Opening the parachute requires timing. It even pays of if the beginner knows how parachute works and what it is made of.

Choosing a landing site is also a fundamental of skydiving. Choosing the right landing spot will help you avoid tangling on trees or ending up in open sea.

When you have enough knowledge of the four fundamentals, it does not mean that you will jump aboard the next plane and do the dive. There are preparations to be done by a skydiver before jumping. Make sure that the equipment are properly packed. You also need to coordinate the jump with the pilot of the plane.

Weather and wind conditions should be checked and monitored, these will decide the best place for jumping off the plane. Jumping pattern and order should also be determined to avoid mid-air collisions. Jumpers should practice the maneuvers that they will do before entering the aircraft.

The average fall speed of skydivers would be 120 to 150 mph. When they are free-falling in the air, jumpers can change their body position and do the maneuvers. All maneuvers are stopped at about 1,200 m or 3,900 feet. Jumpers have to turn away from each other and give the signal before deploying their parachutes. Waving their arms show that the jumpers are ready to deploy the parachutes. But they would have to gain enough space first from each other.

A parachute ride normally lasts two to three minutes only. The jumpers could make the landing softer by flaring the parachutes seconds before the actual landing. To avoid injury in arms and legs during landing, the jumpers could roll forward. There are some experienced jumpers who land on their feet while running.

Skydiving is an enjoyable recreational activity, as long as beginners follow the basic safety measures and listen to their skydiving mentors.
